AI & Technology
AI moves fast.
Build for your next move.
Cloud AI, creative tools or models on your own Mac. We help plan the computer, memory, storage and connected workspace around what you actually want to do.
Everyday AI
Many cloud AI tools can work on the Mac you already own. A new Mac or external drive is not a requirement just to use cloud AI. For Apple Intelligence, we check the exact Mac, software, language and regional availability.
MacBook Air or Mac mini
Creative AI
An editing suite needs more than a chip name. We plan around your software, codecs, project size, displays and how much work runs together. Some AI features process on the Mac; others use a provider’s cloud.
MacBook Pro, Mac mini or Mac Studio
Local models
Local AI capacity depends on the model, precision, context length and other apps using memory. We review your target workflow before recommending a configuration. A small model test is not a promise that every model will run.

Storage is not memory
Unified memory holds the active work your Mac is processing. SSD storage holds apps, model downloads, media and files. An external drive adds capacity but does not add RAM. Plan a fast working drive where needed and a separate backup destination.
Good questions.
Do I need a new Mac mini or external drive for cloud AI?
Not automatically. Cloud tools do most model processing on their provider’s servers. Your current Mac may already suit the apps you use. An external drive is useful when you need more file storage or a backup; it is not required just because you use cloud AI.
What about Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is a separate set of features with device, software, language and regional requirements. Check the exact model before buying, especially a pre-owned Mac. It can use on-device processing and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Third-party AI apps have their own requirements and policies.
Can all AI run privately on my Mac?
A local model can process on the Mac, but connected tools, integrations and cloud fallbacks may send data to external services. We review the proposed workflow, accounts and access with you. No blanket privacy or model-performance promise is made from the hardware alone.
How do I back up the setup?
Keep a separate backup on storage you control. Apple recommends a Time Machine disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity, dedicated to backups. Model libraries, external working drives and team storage need their own recovery plan too.
Your tools. Working together.
ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, NotebookLM and local LLMs: MacFreaks United can help you install supported apps, configure your workspace and connect available integrations.
- Choose the workflow. Research, documents, creative work, coding or team knowledge.
- Configure the setup. Use your own accounts and approved apps, with access limited to the files and services you choose.
- Test and hand over. Try the agreed workflow, document it and show your team how to use it.
Integrations vary by service, plan and operating system. Provider subscriptions and API usage are separate from hardware and setup services.
Start with your brief.
Tell the MacFreaks team which apps or models you use, your project sizes, whether you work at a desk or on location, and your budget. We confirm device availability, compatibility, subscriptions and the installation scope before a setup is agreed.
